Centre for Studies on
the Classical Tradition
in Poland and East-Central Europe

The European tradition grows out of the classical tradition, which co-created our identity. This obvious but sometimes forgotten sentence motivated the founders of the Center for Studies on the Classical Tradition in Poland and East-Central Europe (OBTA) to create an institution, which would coordinate research on the role of the Greek and Latin tradition in the culture of our region. OBTA combines studies on the common heritage with a reflection on regional and national diversification. In other words: OBTA's researchers see in the tradition a pre-figuration of the presence, while in modern culture they look for these elements of this culture which reflect a common European heritage. OBTA is a scientific and didactic center. It gathers an interdisciplinary scientific humanistic milieu; it coordinates international research projects. It organizes seminars, conferences, symposiums; it promotes and directs educational programs: East-Central European School in the Humanities (Polish abbreviation: MSH), Interdepartmental Individual Studies in the Humanities (Polish abbreviation: MISH), Inter-University Studies in the Humanities called Akademia «Artes Liberales» (AAL), in a word: it participates in reforming the educational system and the current cannons of knowledge (for more see links). Its vocation is to change and improve.
